IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC)

Advancing knowledge and cooperation for a healthy ocean and prosperous society

Work Area #5:

Capacity Development

Create adaptive approaches

WESTPAC recognizes capacity development as one of the means of implementation for the achievement of sustainable development. It is committed to developing and enhancing research capacities of, and promoting the transfer of marine technology among individuals, institutions, and countries in the region.

We envision a future in which Member States, grounded on strong scientific understanding and systematic observations of changing climate and ocean ecosystems , are able to implement effective governance for a healthy ocean.

In considerations of regional characteristics, WESTPAC employs adaptive and self-driven approaches to capacity development, with guiding principles to focus on user needs at the regional and national levels, foster North-South and South-South collaborations, and integrate capacity development into the development of solution-oriented research programmes that aim to address critical challenges in the region.
