IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC)

The WESTPAC Advisory Group, composed of the Officers of the Sub-Commission and up to five additional experts in relevant disciplines of marine science, has the responsibility to provide scientific and technical advice on the development, planning and implementation of the activities of the Sub-Commission.
Officers
WESTPAC Officers (Chairperson and Vice-chairpersons) are elected by delegates at each intergovernmental Session. They shall be from Member States in the region and serve for one Session and one intersessional period. They may be re-elected for one additional term of office.
At the 14th Intergovernmental Session of the IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC-XIV, 4-7 April 2023, Jakarta, Indonesia), the Sub-Commission elected, by acclamation, Kentaro Ando from Japan as Chairperson; Aileen Tan Shau Hwai from Malaysia as the first Vice-Chairperson, and Faldi Syamsudin from Indonesia as the second Vice-Chairperson of the Sub-Commission for the next intersessional period.

Advisory Group
The WESTPAC Advisory Group, composed of the Officers of the Sub-Commission and up to five additional experts in relevant disciplines of marine science, has the responsibility to provide scientific and technical advice on the development, planning and implementation of the activities of the Sub-Commission.
The Head of the WESTPAC Office is an ex-officio member for the Group, and will be responsible for the follow-up and coordination of all actions/activities resulting from the WESTPAC Advisory Group.
