Thailand National Marine Science Conference 2008 in Phuket

On 25-27 August 2008, a total of 415 participants from 23 academic institutes, government agencies and private sectors in Thailand and invited representatives from international organizations attended the National Marine Science Conference 2008 in Phuket. The meeting was sponsored by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Thailand, Chevron (Thailand) Co., Ltd., National Research Council of Thailand, and Marine Science Association of Thailand.

The purpose of the meeting was to serve as a platform for sharing the updated information on marine scientific research, identifying the national concerns and stimulating the ideas for further promoting the marine science nationwide.

A number of oral presentations and posters have been made, covering the areas of:
– Marine Invertebrate Zoology
– Marine Vertebrate Zoology
– Coral Reef and Seagrass Ecosystem
– Mangrove Ecology
– Physical Oceanography
– Chemical Oceanography and marine pollution
– Geological Oceanography, GIS and Remote Sensing
– Marine Technology, Tourism and Coastal Zone Management
– Fisheries Oceanography and Breeding and Larviculture of Economic Aquatic Animals

The meeting identified the emergent issues to be addressed and research priorities in the context of climate change. The meeting also highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration of marine scientific research for the sustainable development of marine and coastal resources.

To review the progress periodically, the next national conference has been scheduled for 2010 as one of national activities celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.
