IOC/WESTPAC Workshop on Asian Marginal Seas Program

Role of human-activities on the marine environment through the exchange materials between land and the ocean

Toyama, Japan, 6-8 December 2024

The IOC/WESTPAC Workshop on the Asian Marginal Seas Program is an international scientific event focusing on sustainable and healthy oceans, particularly the impact of human activities on marine environments through land-ocean material exchanges. Scheduled for 6-8 December 2024, the workshop will be held in a hybrid format, with an on-site venue at the Gofuku Campus of the University of Toyama, Japan, and online participation via Zoom. The workshop is organized jointly by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission’s Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (IOC/WESTPAC) and Future Earth Coasts (FEC).
The program includes a business meeting of the WESTPAC Asian Marginal Seas program on 6 December 2024, followed by scientific sessions on 7 December 2024, focusing on the “Nutrient footprint: phase and stage of eutrophication, oligotrophication, and hypoxia.” Topics will cover nutrient transport from land to coastal oceans and from coasts to marginal seas. A joint public forum by WESTPAC and FEC will also be held on 7 December 2024, addressing “Nutrient Management of Coastal Oceans Under Global Climate Change,” with discussions on climate change impacts, nutrient management strategies, and sustainable future planning. On 8 December 2024, a cultural study titled “Water Reincarnation in Toyama” is planned.

The workshop will be conducted in English. For more information, interested participants can contact Jing Zhang at jzhang@sci.u-toyama.ac.jp or register to the event here.
