The IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) cordially invites interested institutions, Member States, and stakeholders to submit new proposal(s) for the WESTPAC Program, Project, or Working Group.

New proposals shall focus on developing and delivering scientific knowledge and capacities for sustainable development. The scope of proposal shall fall within the following Areas of Action. Interested experts and institutions are encouraged to consider aligning initiative(s) with the Challenges of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

I. Ocean-based solutions to climate change (Mitigation, adaptation, and resilience).

II. Marine biodiversity conservation, ocean ecosystem and human health, and blue economy.

III. Marine disaster risk reduction and mitigation.

IV. Ocean literacy and capacity development.

V. Enhanced knowledge for emerging ocean issues

This customary practice aims to mobilize Member States and institutions in the region to make international collective efforts in addressing ocean-related compelling issues, and responding to national and international environmental, social, and economic challenges in the region.

Preliminary proposals are expected to be submitted to the WESTPAC Office (iocwestpac@unesco.org), with a subject line of “Proposal submission”, preferably no later than 31 October 2024. The submission deadline could be extended slightly, based on prior notification. The preliminary proposals will need to be further revised and finalized, upon the considerations by a review panel of the Sub-Commission.

Please use the template for the new proposal (program, project, and working group), and Guidelines for the establishment of the WESTPAC Working Group as below.
