Voluntary commitments to support SDG 14.3

The UN Ocean Conference 2017 called for voluntary commitments that aim to contribute to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 : Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

Voluntary commitments are initiatives voluntarily undertaken, individually or in partnership, by Governments, the United Nations system, other intergovernmental organizations, international and regional financial institutions, nongovernmental organizations and civil society organizations, academic and research institutions, the scientific community, the private sector, philanthropic organizations and other actors.

The IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) made a voluntary commitment to the implementation of SDG 14, with a special focus on SDG 14.3: Minimize and address the impacts of ocean acidification, including through enhanced scientific cooperation at all levels.

#OceanAction15274

Development and strengthening of the regional research and monitoring network, as part of global efforts, on the ecological impacts of ocean acidification on coral reef ecosystems in the Western Pacific and its adjacent regions in support of the SDG 14.

We have been developing research capacity and transferring marine technology among individuals, institutions and countries , advancing our understanding on ocean and contributing to the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON), to detect and understand the drivers of ocean acidification in estuarine-coastal-open ocean environments and the resulting impacts on marine ecosystems, in order to provide key inputs to communities, industry and governments seeking to develop action plans to address ocean acidification impacts.
