SUMMARY:Mangrove Monitoring International Training
DESCRIPTION:Mangrove health index (MHI) has been developed to propose a single metric for estimating forest community healthiness based on three main stand structure parameters\, i.e. diameter\, canopy coverage and density. The index was considered for representing mangrove ecosystems on an ecosystem scale since mangrove plant communities have an important role in ecosystem productivity and stabilized food chain. The value of MHI was significantly correlated to several vegetation indices based on remote sensing analysis. MHI could be estimated from multiple indices such as GCI\, SIPI\, NBR and ARVI. The model is the potential to be applied in other areas and various temporal settings. The development of MHI could be encouraged as a new approach for assessing mangrove forest during managing mangrove in international scale. \nIn addition\, a smartphone-based app\, namely MonMang\, has been released in October 2020 which has a functionality to record\, analyze\, and interpret data simultaneously on the field site\, so that parameter information could be completed real-time (Dharmawan\, 2020). On the initial version\, MonMang facilitates some basic information such as parameters in mangrove community structure for forest monitoring\, a robust canopy coverage value based on hemispherical photography method\, a single metric of mangrove health index (MHI) and threat quantification. Recently\, MonMang has been significantly upgraded with some features which is not only used for monitoring activities but also enhancing young generation awareness in mangrove existence. \nPROGRAMME-BOOK_MMIT2021Download

SUMMARY:Thirteenth Intergovernmental Session of the IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC-XIII)
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n									Agenda & Document\n									Overview \nOn behalf of the WESTPAC Officers\, we have the pleasure of inviting Member States in the region to carry on their intergovernmental guidance of the IOC programmes despite the difficult conditions imposed on us by the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic. The WESTPAC Officers\, Advisory Group and the Head of WESTPAC Office have been monitoring closely the situation and would like to recommend that the Thirteenth Intergovernmental Session of the IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC-XIII) be conducted virtually from 27 to 29 April 2021\, with three-hour daily sessions to ensure participants’ health and facilitate their participation from various time zones. The virtual session will be kindly “hosted” by the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in English as customary. \nThe agenda for the session will focus on essential issues requiring attention\, guidance and collective actions of IOC Member States in the region. After briefly reviewing the progress of the Sub-Commission over the last intersessional period\, the session will hear the latest development at global level on the UN Ocean Decade and IOC strategy development\, and further deliberate on the Sub-Commission’s engagement in and contribution to the Decade. The Sub-Commission will be expected to formulate its workplan and budget for the 2022–2023 biennium and will elect its Officers. \nThe session will bring together national competent governmental agencies and ocean research communities\, aiming to strengthen the science-policy interface\, advance international ocean science development and cooperation\, and enhance institutional capacities\, in order to address critical challenges for sustainability in the Western Pacific and its adjacent areas. \nWe would like to kindly request delegations to focus their interventions on providing the vision\, guidance\, and recommendations for practical actions. SUMMARY:WESTPAC Ocean Acidification Symposium & Fifth WESTPAC Workshop on Research and Monitoring of the Ecological Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Coral Reef Ecosystems\, Xiamen\, China
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to inform you that the 5th WESTPAC Workshop on Research and Monitoring of the Ecological Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Coral Reef Ecosystems (WESTPAC OA workshop) was scheduled for 6-7 November 2018\, Xiamen\, China. Preceding the OA workshop\, a WESTPAC OA Science workshop will be held on 5 November 2018 in conjunction with the OA workshop. We would take this opportunity to extend our sincere appreciation to the Third Institute of Oceanography\, State Oceanic Administration of China for hosing and its generous support to the two events. \nAs you are aware that WESTPAC has been committed to driving and coordinating the development of a sustained research and monitoring network on OA in the Western Pacific and its adjacent regions\, as one regional component of the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON). In addition to featuring OA studies at the 9th and 10th WESTPAC International Marine Science Conferences (22-25 April 2014\, Nha Trang\, Vietnam & 17-20 April 2017\, Qingdao\, China)\, its on-going efforts focus on developing a programme to monitor the impacts of ocean acidification on coral reef ecosystems\, mainly through a series of regional/national trainings & scientific workshops\, the development of Standard Operating/Monitoring Procedures (SOPs) and their demonstrations at pilot sites\, and transfer of knowledge and technology among experts\, institutions and countries within and outside the region. \nThe one-day ocean acidification science symposium on 5 November 2018 will be dedicated to scientific presentations\, mainly on the latest OA studies and its impacts at global\, regional and local scales; and OA research approaches\, methods\, and techniques. This symposium aims to convoke researchers\, students\, government representatives from the Western Pacific and its adjacent regions\, and is also open to the global community interested in acquiring a regional and global knowledge about the impacts of ocean acidification on marine resources and ecosystems in the region. \nFollowing the symposium\, the fifth WESTPAC workshop on Research and Monitoring of the Ecological Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Coral Reef Ecosystems will be held on 6-7 November 2018. This workshop is a continuation of the previous annual workshops (19-21 January 2015\, 26-28 August 2015\, 29–31 August 2016\, and 14-15 December 2017\, Phuket\, Thailand)\, with objectives to review the progress made since the last year in the pilot sites; examine strengths\, challenges and lessons learned from the programme implementation in the past; identify partnership building opportunities and replicate best practice\, while taking into account the results generated from the science symposium preceding the workshop. \nIn addition to inviting participants from among the participants in previous workshops\, we would be happy to open up this opportunity to other participants who are interested to join the network or develop collaborations. Again\, they should have experience conducting ocean acidification related monitoring\, and/or be able to lead and carry out ocean acidification monitoring and research in your countries for moving forward. \n\nAbout the event\nOcean acidification is affecting the entire ocean\, seas and estuaries\, as the increased acidity can have severe impacts on many organisms that make up the complex and productive food web\, especially these carbonate-dependent or calcifying species such as oysters\, clams\, corals and calcareous plankton. \nThe Western Pacific and its adjacent regions are among the richest and most productive in the world with many countries in the region socially\, economically and culturally dependent upon marine and coastal resources. In order to improve our understanding of ocean acidification and the ecosystem response to ocean acidification\, and eventually enable resource managers and policy makers to develop effective long-term mitigation and adaptation strategies\, sustained research and monitoring are critically needed to develop meaningful projections on ocean acidification and its future impacts on marine ecosystems in the region. \nThe UNESCO/IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) drives and coordinates the development of a sustained research and monitoring network on OA in the Western Pacific and its adjacent regions\, as one regional component of the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON). In addition to featuring OA studies at the 9th and 10th WESTPAC International Marine Science Conferences (22-25 April 2014\, Nha Trang\, Vietnam & 17-20 April 2017\, Qingdao\, China)\, its on-going efforts focus on developing a programme to monitor the impacts of ocean acidification on coral reef ecosystems\, mainly through a series of regional/national trainings & scientific workshops\, the development of Standard Operating/Monitoring Procedures (SOPs) and their demonstrations at pilot sites\, and transfer of knowledge and technology among experts\, institutions and countries within and outside the region. \nThe Third Institute of Oceanography\, State Oceanic Administration of China (http://www.tio.org.cn/) is a national non-profit comprehensive marine research institute situated in Xiamen city\, Fujian province. Sharing the same mission to advance marine science development and cooperation\, TIO would like to join the collective efforts in safeguarding the health of ocean ecosystems and contribute to the development of the WESTPAC ocean acidification network \n\nWhat we aim to achieve?\nThe one-day ocean acidification science symposium on 5 November will be dedicated to scientific presentations\, mainly on the latest OA studies and its impacts at global\, regional and local scales; and OA research approaches\, methods\, and techniques. This symposium will be an opportunity for participants to share their latest research results and to explore new opportunities of collaborative research in the region. \nFollowing the symposium\, the fifth WESTPAC workshop on Research and Monitoring of the Ecological Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Coral Reef Ecosystems will be held on 6-7 November. This workshop is a continuation of the previous annual workshops (19-21 January 2015\, 26-28 August 2015\, 29–31 August 2016\, and 14-15 December 2017\, Phuket\, Thailand)\, with objectives to review the progress made since the last year in the pilot sites; examine strengths\, challenges and lessons learned from the programme implementation in the past; identify partnership building opportunities and replicate best practice\, while taking into account the results generated from the science symposium preceding the workshop. \n\nWho will participate?\nThe one-day symposium will convoke researchers\, students\, government representatives from the Western Pacific and its adjacent regions\, and is also open to the global community interested in acquiring a regional and global knowledge about the impacts of ocean acidification on marine resources and ecosystems in the region. \nMost participants in the fifth WESTPAC workshop will be invited from among the participants in previous workshops\, particularly those who are conducting regular monitoring and research in their selected pilot sites. Preferably two will be invited from each site\, one on biological and another on chemical aspects. \nOther participants who are interested to join the network or develop collaborations\, will also be welcome. Again\, they should have experience conducting ocean acidification related monitoring\, and/or be able to lead and carry out ocean acidification monitoring and research in your countries for moving forward. \n\nHow to register or apply financial assistance\nFor anyone who is interested to join either or both events\, please fill in the Registration Form. \nThere is a very limited resource in support of the international travel of some colleagues\, particularly those from the developing states. A joint committee will be established to select the most suitable participants that would be provided with financial support. The selection will be made mainly based on the applicant’s CV\, his/her descriptions about work experience in the Form\, and his/her engagement in WESTPAC or other international programmes. SUMMARY:WESTPAC Workshop on Research and Monitoring of the Ecological Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Coral Reef Ecosystems\, Phuket\, Thailand
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n									Agenda & Document\n									Overview \nThe ocean has absorbed about one third of the anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions since the industrial revolution\, greatly reducing the impact of this greenhouse gas on the climate. However\, this massive input of CO2 is generating global changes in the chemistry of seawater\, especially on the carbonate system. These changes are collectively referred to as “ocean acidification” because increased CO2 lowers seawater pH (i.e.\, increases its acidity). Quantitatively\, ocean acidity has increased by 30% (0.1 decrease in pH) since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. It is predicted that the future CO2 absorption into the ocean will result in a decrease of pH of 0.3-0.4 and a 16% decrease in carbonate ion concentrations by 2100. According to geological records\, this acidification is happening at rates not seen for at least 50 million years. \nRecent studies have shown that the resulting decrease in ocean pH will make it more difficult for marine calcifying organisms\, such as corals\, molluscs\, and calcareous plankton\, to form biogenic calcium carbonate\, and existing calcium carbonate structures will become vulnerable to dissolution. Thus\, ongoing acidification of the oceans poses a threat to ocean-based security. Since this ocean acidification may be occurring more rapidly than prior ocean acidification events that are thought to have coincided with mass extinction events\, there are concerns that marine ecosystems will change\, that biodiversity will be lost\, and that important ecosystem services that human societies depend upon for food security\, livelihoods\, and coastal protection could be significantly impacted. Unfortunately\, the effects of ocean acidification on organisms and ecosystems remain poorly understood\, with most of our knowledge based on simplified laboratory experiments. \nThe Western Pacific and its adjacent regions are among the richest and most productive in the world as a home to more than 600 coral species (more than 75% of all known coral species) and ~53% of the world’s coral reefs. Most Southeast Asian coastal communities are socially and economically dependent upon coral reef ecosystems and an estimated 70-90% of fish caught in Southeast Asia are dependent on coral reefs. Globally\, it has been estimated that coral reefs support greater than 25% of all known marine species. \nDespite the recognition that ocean acidification from increasing levels of atmospheric CO2 represents a major global threats to coral reefs and other calcifying marine organisms\, awareness of the impacts of this ‘other CO2 problem’ has emerged only over the last decade.
